Do Not Open This Book

image

This looks like a great book doesn’t it? That is why I borrowed it from the library.

Well to be honest I couldn’t tell you.

I tried to read it but I got in trouble from Adam.

Because it says “Do not open this book”

According to Adam if I break the rules bad things can happen.

Despite trying to explain that it’s just a book he would only let me get to page 3 which said it was a safe page.

I think Adam flipped through it because he said I would let all the monkeys out if I kept reading.

But I like monkeys!

So in the end my book choice resulted in a near meltdown and I have been asked by Adam to take the book back and get a different one.

I’m not quite sure at the moment that my child’s insistence to not open the book is a parenting win or fail.

Review: The Customer Rules: The 39 Essential Rules for Delivering Sensational Service

The Customer Rules: The 39 Essential Rules for Delivering Sensational Service
The Customer Rules: The 39 Essential Rules for Delivering Sensational Service by Lee Cockerell

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My obsession with Disney’s customer service is continuing almost an entire year after our trip. I picked up this book because Lee Cockerell is a former executive vice president of Walt Disney World. He wasn’t in his position while we were there however there is no way that someone who high up works at a company for 10 years and doesn’t change the groundwork for those later to see.

This book is full of great customer service tips, as Lee recommended everyone should read this book. It not only can apply those at the front line of retail but those who answer the phone at an office, if you are a teacher or doctor. You may not think of parents or your patients as customers but the suggestions on how to handle different situations.

I have been in retail for over 10 years now and this book even had me thinking about different situations I have been in even as recently as the past few weeks.

The book is well written. Lee doesn’t draw out the examples or stories he tells, he respects that people are busy. He’s straight to the point but explains things very well. Each rule has a few pages dedicated to it at the maximum. Most of the rules are one or two pages. It was a very quick and easy read.

The other books that Lee has written have been added to my must read list. If you are thinking about learning about improving or learning about customer service this should be the first book you pick up.

Review: The Christmas Scrapbook: A Harmony Story

The Christmas Scrapbook: A Harmony Story
The Christmas Scrapbook: A Harmony Story by Philip Gulley
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was an adorable book! It was well written and I fell in love with the characters right away. What drew me to this book was the title. I am a scrapbooker and I can appreciate the trouble that Sam the main character went through. When this simple adventure of creating a gift for his wife ends up causing the whole town to believe he’s dying made me chuckle the whole time I was reading. It was a good wholesome story and I am going to seek out the other books because sometimes you just need a story like the one told in this book.

Review: The Book of (Even More) Awesome

The Book of (Even More) Awesome
The Book of (Even More) Awesome by Neil Pasricha
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved the first Book of Awesome, so reading this book was a no brainer. Even better when I picked it up for $3.99. AWESOME!

In this book Neil continues to point out all the little things in life that are awesome like being the only person on the beach or eating the tips of pies. There were so many awesome things that made be sigh and go yes, I know that feeling and it is awesome.

This book is a fantastic quick read (granted I didn’t read it quickly), and it is a great book to reach for when you are feeling blue because sometimes we all need a reminder that the big things don’t matter, it’s all these small awesome things that complete life.

Review: The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2014

The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2014
The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2014 by Bob Sehlinger
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I picked this book up in preparation for our upcoming trip to Disney. The thing that caught my eye was on the front it said “How to cut you wait in line by 4 hours a day”. Then when I picked up the book I opened it to a chapter that had a title “Saving Money.” How can you not dive into a book that can save you time and money.

I have flipped through a few books and this is the most comprehensive of any travel books I have come across. I have read almost every page skipping the spa section because there is not a chance I’ll get treated to spa time and the section on Universal Studios.

I found the breakdown of every park and every ride quite helpful as well as the corresponding app on the iPad has been an excellent planning tool. The website is more comprehensive and the features are accessible at a tiny additional fee but worth every penny I paid.

At times I found the book was overwhelming with maybe too much information to read from front to back and at times I felt a bit of anxiety going there and trying to decide what to take our son on and what would make for a well-rounded trip for everyone. I also loved the sections on parenting your child at Disney. I think Brian and I are doing a great job however there were things in there I didn’t think of or think to prepare for.

This book despite some of the small things that I didn’t like will be packed and traveling with us. It covered everything I wanted to know, much I didn’t know i needed to know and some fun facts in between.

I highly recommend this book for anyone traveling to Disney. It’s been several years since I have been to Disney and this book has prepared me for the trip.

Review: Zoo

Zoo
Zoo by James Patterson
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

The dust cover of this book declared Zoo as “James Patterson’s best work ever.”

I rate it as “meh”

The story line was one with much potential. The animals of the world are unexpectantly attacking humans. They are changing they way they behave and around the world have started to create packs and take over civilization. The main character Jackson Oz has been trying to warn the world that these events were happening and getting worse over time.

I found the first half of the book slightly boring. The second half was excellent and the ending made me want to burn the book. The ideas were plausible when it comes to scientific stories. There was one part of the book where it skips over five years of time which in an environmental meltdown seemed like forever.

I personally wish the book started about half way to 3/4 through and then focused on what happened, the solution and the world after the height of the attacks.

I’m starting to feel like James Patterson is losing his touch. His books are quick easy reads however they are becoming more and more lackluster compared to the books that first caught my attention.

I have two other James Patterson books on my potential books of this year however for my next book I’ll put him on the back burner.

I really want to rate this book higher however I’m afraid I just can’t do it.

The Magic of Dr Seuss

20130414-210507.jpg

I’ve come to appreciate Dr Seuss even more then I did before. He has become a staple in our house. At the moment we only have 3 of his books. Green Eggs and Ham, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish and Hop on Pop. As a child I had every book in the collection but they were on loan and were returned once we outgrew them.

Adam and I read the books we have at least twice a day. Sometimes I roll my eyes because I hate some of the lines like “box gox in yellow socks” and realistically how many times can you read Green Eggs and Ham. After this weekend the answer is as many times as Adam wants me to.

On Friday we took the books over to my parents house and Adam sat down to read with Gramma. Gramma started reading but stopped at the last word. Adam had no problem completing the sentence. He’s not reading the word, he’s memorized it however it still blew my mind.

Tonight I decided to try the same thing with One Fish, Two Fish. He was not only able to finish the last word but on some pages he was even able to say entire sentences. It made me proud.

Tonight has reinforced the importance of reading time. I didn’t really feel like reading but I did anyways. I’m so glad that I did. Going forward I don’t care if it’s past bed time or late at night. We will sit every night and read at least one book.

When I read the words aren’t going in one ear and out the other. They are sticking and in time Adam will be able to read on his own and we will have taught Adam maybe one of the most important thing he’ll ever learn.

Review: Redefining Success: Still Making Mistakes

Redefining Success: Still Making Mistakes
Redefining Success: Still Making Mistakes by W. Brett Wilson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Brett’s sent out a Tweet asking for 10 interested bloggers to review his new book. I submitted my blog with no expectation in being chosen as Brett has over 50,000 followers. Much to my surprise shortly after I submitted my site, I received an e-mail from Brett’s camp saying that they had chosen my site and were sending me advance copies.

I waited in anticipation for the books to arrive. When they finally arrived I sent photos to everyone and received the best response from my sister asking if Brett put a cheque in the book as a bookmark.

I had such high expectations for this book, however now that I am done I have mixed feelings over it.

Brett was always one of my favourite dragons on the Dragon’s Den. On TV he always came across as the one you wanted to do business with. Always very respectful and carried himself with integrity. He came across as the type of guy you want to do business with. You want to sit and have a coffee with him and hear what he has to say.

This book covers many topics. It is an autobiographical, self-help, inspirational and general business book. The title of the book Redefining Success – Still Making Mistakes sounded like something I needed to read. Having just decided to take a break from my personal business, and needing to evaluate things I was hoping this book would offer some insight or inspire me to start the evaluation process.

The book was interesting going through Brett’s many ventures in business however I was expecting to learn more about the business ventures, what was successful and what failed and what lessons Brett learned from these failures. It shines through in the book that how Brett acts in the media eye is who he really is. He runs and deals his business with the upmost respect and integrity. There were sections in the book that it felt more like a name dropping session. This came across as odd because
Brett doesn’t seem like he would intentionally do this.

I also felt like Brett’s battle of prostate cancer was just a blip in the book. Maybe it was something he didn’t want share with us in detail and I can respect that.

A few things really rubbed me the wrong way in the book; however I acknowledge that Brett is probably telling the truth. He discussed that the pursuit of material success will eventually leave you empty and that we should be pursuing something more charitable. This rubbed me the wrong way because as a person of means this is an easy thing to do. I am someone who does what I can, donate when money permits and gives my time and talents to a local non-profit organization. I personally would love to do more but a certain amount of money is required to live comfortably in life. If you cannot take care of yourself you will not be able to give yourself fully to causes you want to. When the car starts to squeak and given the choice of giving money to a charity or giving the time needed to make that money most, myself included will chose to fix the car.

The other thing that drove me nuts was a grammar error. Multiple times the phrase “Arlene and Me”; where it should be “Arlene and I”. This drove me up the wall because I have spent years being corrected and find myself correcting others when this error is made.

I loved the sections on the Dragon’s Den deals. This gave a wonderful insight into what happened after the cameras stopped rolling. I think this is the section that I learned the most from. It had not only Brett’s insight to the deal but also had the insights of the actual entrepreneurs.

I also really enjoyed the Top 5 lists at the end of the book. It gave an insight to Brett and you can tell a lot about a person by the music they listen to, their life bucket lists and their best and worst moments.

I gave this book 3 out of 5. I enjoyed the book. At times I found it dry yet at the same time interesting, and I expected something different. I personally was hoping I could take more away from the book that I could apply to my own personal situation.

Now that I have ripped apart Brett’s book I did want to say on an awesome person scale, Brett gets a 10 out of 5. If more people were able to do what he does for charity and mentoring this world would be a much better place. I am inspired by what he does and I would love to be able to do the same. Maybe one day in my life I will be able to do more than what I am doing now.

I am hoping that Brett’s book tour comes close to where I am. I would love to meet him and shake his hand. There is something we can all learn from Brett and for that I applaud him.

The wonderful people at Penguin Canada and Prairie Merchant sent me 2 autographed copies of the book. One for me to review and one to give away to my loyal readers.

This is probably the easiest give away you will enter. If you would like a chance to win your own autographed copy of Redefining Success – Still Making Mistakes the only thing you have to do is email your name to oneofthosememories@gmail.com or if you read this from my Facebook page like the link. I will take e-mails and likes until Saturday, November 10th, 2012 at 11:59 EST. All the names will go into a draw and then I will contact the winner to arrange delivery of the book. I will announce the winner on Monday, November 12th, 2012.

The book is available TODAY for purchase at your favourite bookstore.

Review: Abraham Lincoln : Vampire Hunter

Abraham Lincoln : Vampire Hunter
Abraham Lincoln : Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

With this book made into a movie I wanted to read the book before seeing the movie. I love the idea of fusing fact with fiction and when done right it can be an enjoyable experience. National Treasure is a perfect example of this being done well.

The book was very well done and started with the story of a struggling author being asked to write a book based on Lincoln’s diaries. This part is done very well. With the author doing research to fill in the blanks and foot notes to make it feel genuine to fill in facts to the story without making the story drag on.

The ending of the book was fantastic. It actually wrapped up the story in a perfect way granted it left me wanting more. It was something I couldn’t of even thought of.

Throughout the book I felt I wanted more, however at the end was satisfied with it.

It was a fun read and I would recommend it. I am concerned that I may be a little biased because this is the first book I’ve read after completing the 50 Shades Trilogy and that was so poorly written anything is better compared to it. My Mom however also agrees that this was a great book.

I did watch the movie immediately following completing the book and I was very disappointed in the movie. It was no where close to the book. It changed so many story lines of the book that it was like watching a totally different story. The ending as well was such a disappointing ending, nothing like the amazing one in the book it boggles me as to why they even made a movie based on this book. I will give credit where credit is due, though highly unrealistic the fight scenes with the vampires were well done and entertaining.

Read the book, see the movie. You’ll like the book way more.
